Arts Melbourne are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for an East Midlands based sound artist. Building on our current year-round offering outside of our successful annual Arts Festival, we are launching a series of new public projects: ‘The Making Way’. This series will commission and support local artists to create original works. Each project will be created through a process that engages and collaborates with the local community and each outcome will be displayed publicly within the area.
The first in this series is ‘Together Through Sound’, For this we are inviting one sound artist based in the East Midlands to work with and respond to our Sound Library - a collection of recordings contributed by local residents and gathered by us to create an ‘audio profile’ of the local area and their experiences during lock down.
We are looking for one artist to use this collection of sounds to create a new public sound installation that will be installed at listening points on a trail around the village for the month of September 2020 - this would have been the time of the annual Melbourne Arts Festival which this year has sadly been canceled.
We hope that the commissioned artists will use the sound library to create a platform for sharing a collective community voice and use these recordings to celebrate the history, heritage and culture in the area.
We would like the installation to reconnect residents, encourage them to collectively re-imagine the place in which they live and explore how their relationship with ‘home’ has changed during this time.
The Artist commissioned should work with our sound library in an innovative way to create an original piece that explores the local area and creates a captivating portrait of the local community.
There is a £400 Artists fee as well as a small materials budget. Artist support will be available from The Making Way Project leaders and Arts Melbourne Director. We are particularly keen to offer this opportunity to an artist based in the East Midlands Area who has an interest in collaboration, working with communities and is experienced in working with sound creatively.
